  • Split into men's & women's groups.
  • In Trios. Break off into same-gender groups of three.

Warm Ups

1. Share your high moment of the week.

2. Share your low moment of the week.

3. How was your Thanksgiving?

4. How did God remind you of His presence this week?

Note for Leaders: You don't have to do every question listed. Choose the best ones for your group!

Getting Started

  • Do you put Christmas music on right after the Thanksgiving meal is over, or do you tend to wait until the week before Christmas to get a tree?
  • This Sunday was the first Sunday in the season of Advent. What is Advent all about?
    • Highlight blue text for follow-up question --> The word "Advent" comes from the Greek word "Parousia" which means "Second Coming?" So, did you know that the season of Advent has a dual focus of looking forward to (1) a celebration of Jesus' birth and (2) expectantly awaiting his return? How might that information affect your meditation on this advent season?
  • When you think of past Decembers, were they relaxing, or crazy? Were you able to focus on the reason for the season, or did distractions win?

Going Further

  • We've all attended worship with a halfway focused heart before. It's easy to become distracted, bored or let the worries of life take up mental space. The season of Advent begs us to sink into our chair, leaving all else behind and just be in the moment. To worship fully!
  • We all have "off" days every now and then, but this week's reading from Revelation 3:14-16 reminds us of the danger of leading a lukewarm, half-hearted life of faith. In the passage, God has a message for a church that was neither hot nor cold for Jesus. Read it.
    • Are there ways in which your faith is lukewarm at the moment? Halfway focused? Going through the motions?
  • What are some of the things our minds can be distracted by in this season? How can we clear away some of the mental space devoted to these issues?
  • Read Luke 1:39-56.
    • Wow! What causes Mary to just launch into an unexpected psalm of worship?
      • Note: Mary's psalm may have been spontaneous and spirit-driven, but it clearly draws from an underlying knowledge of Old Testament psalms of praise, thanksgiving and wisdom.
    • What can we learn from Mary's example? How can we get an "all-in" heart like that?
  • Do you have any traditions that have helped you put Jesus first during this season?

Optional Worship Song

  • If you'd like, you can sing the following song as a group. Be sure to turn up the volume so that less confident singers feel comfortable.

    • In your prayers for this week, please consider the following!
      • Those in your life who don't know Jesus. Pray for them by name!
      • Pray that God would entrust you with someone who needs a Christian voice in their life.
      • St. John's multi-site campus plant in the Highlands.
      • Pray for a Gospel movement in our city.
      • Pray for our nation.
    • Shake it up! You might try a different prayer posture this week. Did you know that people in the Old Testament prayed by looking up toward Heaven and stretching their arms out? You could also hold hands as a group, etc.
