  • In Trios. Break off into same-gender groups of three.

Warm Ups

1. Share your high moment of the week.

2. Share your low moment of the week.

3. Look up the #1 song from the day you were born ( How do you feel about it?

4. How has God shown up in your life this week?

Getting Started

  • Let's say that you read a news story, or talk to someone at the grocery store, hear something on TV - how would you know if it's reliable information or not?
  • What stuck out from Stephen's Sunday message on 1 John 4:1-6?
  • Is it easy or difficult for you to recognize that Satan and the spiritual forces of evil are at work in our world?

Going Further

  • We're going to conduct a more thorough review of 1 John 4:1-6.
    • Read verse 1 in the ESV translation first, and then in the GW translation. The ESV translation is a "word for word" translation, while the God's Word translation leans more toward "thought for thought." How does the God's Word translation help us interpret what is meant by "test the spirits?"
    • The passage goes on to list three ways that you can test whether someone is speaking in accordance with the Holy Spirit. What are they?
      • Highlight here if you get stuck --> 1. Do they confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh? 2. Do they speak "from the world" or from the Word of God? 3. Do they listen to those who have the Holy Spirit? <--
      • Read 2 John 1:7 and also read from the Athanasian Creed - the paragraph that begins with, "Furthermore." Why is it so important that we confess that Jesus was not only divine, but also human?
      • Read 1 Corinthians 12:3Why is that confessing Jesus is a good test of whether someone is speaking from the Spirit of God or from the world?
      • How is the 3rd test, "whoever knows God listens to us" both a legitimate test and something that leaders could abuse? How would you determine if a leader is abusing this or not?
    • Read Verse 4. What promises of God does John remind us here?
      • Need help? Click here and read the paragraph that begins with "The distinction between the spirit of truth..."
      • Where is the balance between taking comfort in Jesus' redemption and protection and being on our guard against false teaching, teachers and spirits?
      • Discuss how the following quote applies to the teaching of 1 John 4:1-16: "A good defense is a good offense."

Optional Worship Song

  • If you'd like, you can sing the following song as a group. Be sure to turn up the volume so that less confident singers feel comfortable.
